Playschool: Acknowledgment of Country

Luke, Miranda and Hunter give an Acknowledgement of Country.
We have shared this special episode before but it is such a great show that can be watched time and time again. The stories, songs, music, dance and creative projects included are carefully chosen and contain one of our favourite books 'Where the forest meets the sea'.

Welcome to the land of the Wurundjeri people

The Wurundjeri People take their name from the Woiwurrung language word 'wurun' meaning the Manna Gum which is found along the 'Birrarung' (Yarra River), and 'djeri', the grub which is found in or near the tree. Wurundjeri are the 'Witchetty Grub People' and their ancestors have lived on this land for millenia.

Connection to country

Indigenous planting and time in nature

One way we care for Country is by planting many indigenous plants at kinder. Our new signs bring attention to significant plants and support children, educators and visitors to learn the names and uses of them. Children’s connection to Country is also supported on our wider visits to the reserve and bush kinder sessions. Time in nature supports children's curiosity and love of being outside, as well as their knowledge and respect for the land and all the things that grow and live there.

Little J and Big Cuz

Follows the adventures of Indigenous Australian kids Little J and Big Cuz living with their Nanna and Old Dog

Watching television programs from our National Indigenous Television station, NITV (part of the SBS family) is a great way to spend some time as a family.  For example, you could watch an episode of this award-winning animation Little J & Big Cuz each day for the duration of NAIDOC Week (and beyond – there are two seasons so far!). There are episodes translated into Aboriginal languages Pintinjarra, Arrernte, Wiradjuri, Yawuru.

First Languages Australia
Interactive languages map

A great site to explore is this one produced by First Languages Australia.
They work with regional language centres to develop a map that reflects the names and groupings favoured by community. It includes information about each language and some great videos. The Woiwurrung section has a couple of videos of children singing (head, shoulders, knees and toes) in Woiwurrung language.
