“Play is the highest form of research.”  – Albert Einstein

Winston Hills has three four-year-old groups, RedYellow, and Purple. Each group operates for three sessions  per week (15 hours each in total).

Children may attend four-year-old Kinder provided they will be four years of age as at 30 April in the year of their attendance.

Play-based learning

There is an overwhelming amount of research to show that children learn best by playing. This means that when children are interested and curious about something they are more likely to investigate, explore and engage with their environment; learning about themselves and the world around them.

Play enables children to develop a strong foundation of skills and dispositions needed for future academic success. During play children learn about themselves, their relationships with others, and the world around them. Through play children ‘learn how to learn’.

We provide children with opportunities to ‘learn through play’ in a supportive and creative environment, where their imagination and curiosity can develop. In an enriched play environment, children learn by experimenting, and trying things over and over to solve problems and achieve goals.

“Play is our brain’s favourite way of learning.”  – Diane Ackerman

Indoor/Outdoor Program

Winston Hills Preschool provides a wonderful opportunity for children to choose whether they would like to play inside or outside. This provides children with access to a wide variety of resources, and allows them to pursue their interests, and explore and experiment with ideas.

This play develops children’s concentration, persistence, problem solving skills, independence, creativity and ability to negotiate relationships with peers.

During play, children are given the time and space to explore and formulate their own ideas. During this time teachers and co-educators sensitively observe and carefully choose the moments when they might subtly introduce an element which will extend the child’s learning and discovery.

Outdoors, children’s connection with nature is fostered. Children are offered all of the learning resources that are offered indoors such as art, blocks, books, puzzles, box construction and more, with the added bonus of being surrounded by nature.

“Children learn as they play.  Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn.”

Enrolment for four-year-old kinder is done centrally through the Banyule City Council and further information can be found on their website.
